I’m Kate.

I believe that design is for everyone to learn and practice, and that everything that is designed can be redesigned. These two truths fuel my work. My energy and engagement are at their peak when I am working with a group of people - on a collaborative project or in a classroom.

The most complex system I’ve designed, to date, was the newly founded Department of Design at UT Austin, starting in 2018. I led the development of new experiences and systems from curriculum to faculty hiring, the design of new physical spaces, and the creation of innovative infrastructure including admissions practices, campus-wide partnerships, and rituals of belonging. Our focus was on expanding access to design education and expanding the definitions of design work from inside an enormous, excellent, public institution. In 2024, I stepped “back to the faculty” to spend more time and energy in my own classrooms and to deepen and expand my design consulting practice.

Before UT, I was the founder of the MADI program (Master of Arts in Design and Innovation) at SMU. The first chapter of my career, though, unfolded at design and innovation power-houses IDEO and frog design, where I worked on everything from shampoo packaging and a Barbie Dream House (for real) to financial services and hospital systems. I have a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University, where I minored in Studio Art.
